    What's really going on?

This was my last show at The University of Texas at Austin. I was fortunate enough to be the Assistant Stage Manager and The Master Truck Driver. We toured all over central Texas From as far North as Killeen and as far south as San Antonio. Roxanne the Director Taught my High school director who helped me get into UT so I jumped on the opportunity to be on this show with her. This was my first time touring with a school show and I loved it. I enjoyed seeing the kids watch the actors and react to them.

    Mariachi surprise celebration

During one of the many stops on tour, we spent the night in San Antonio so we could wake up the next day and put on our show at the Magik Theatre. The night before load-in, we all went out to dinner somewhere along the River Walk and decided to get Mexican food.

While we were eating, I kept sneaking away from the table to go get margaritas. I’m not exactly sure how many I had by the end of the night, but I do remember that somewhere around margarita number three, I found a mariachi band along the River Walk looking to be hired. Naturally, I hired them. I brought them over to our table to surprise Roxanne, sing “Happy Birthday” to her, and give her a full mariachi birthday serenade. It was one of those completely random tour moments that somehow turned into one of my favorite memories from the trip.

Mariachi Band Birthday comeback by Roxanne

And then, at the end of the school semester, after our final show had wrapped up, Roxanne had the cast, crew, and audience stay for a few minutes while she gave a speech about the semester and everything we had accomplished together.

After she finished her speech, she had one more surprise. As a little payback for the time I had hired a mariachi band to serenade her in San Antonio, Roxanne surprised me—and everyone else—by bringing in a mariachi band of her own.

It was the perfect full-circle moment. What had started as a random, margarita-fueled joke along the San Antonio River Walk came all the way back around at the end of the semester. She definitely got me back.

"Man, those Girls are one hundred percent Coo-coo for cocoa puffs--sheesh."
